ALTITUDE

ALTITUDE connects two extreme landscapes: the Ötztal Alps, Alexander Maria Lohmann’s home, and the high mountain world of the Himalayas.

In his works from the Ötztal Alps, Lohmann places his familiar alpine surroundings in a compelling dialogue with the world’s metropolises. Photographs of nature meet urban imagery from New York City and Las Vegas, merging nature and civilization into new visual contexts.

At the heart of the project are his works from the Himalayas, featuring peaks such as Ama Dablam and Mount Everest, some photographed on clear, star-filled nights at altitudes above 6,000 metres. Hundreds of individual photographs are combined into large-scale compositions.

Inspired by a Buddhist monk, Lohmann overlaid the photographs with lines, mandalas, mantras and reflections of the sky as a gesture of respect. A quiet dialogue between spirituality, nature and art emerged, gradually dissolving the boundary between photography and artistic interpretation.
