WHOLEOFTHEMOON

Three major photography projects have repeatedly taken Alexander Maria Lohmann to extremes and beyond boundaries, to the remotest regions and the most vibrant metropolises. For his new project WHOLEOFTHEMOON, he carried his search of solitude to new heights: By plane and on foot, a specially equipped expedition took him into the heart of the Guyanese jungle. After weeks of exertions, he came upon an entirely pristine landscape, the world’s oldest rock formations and an utterly breathtaking diversity of life. One of the few remaining spots on Earth that no human being had ever set foot on before.

WHOLEOFTHEMOON is a fireworks display of extremes and the quintessence of Lohman’s artistry so far. With his Leica SL, he exclusively photographed panoramas at extremely high resolution. During a lengthy process in his studio, he compiled them into enormous tableaus and combined them with photographs of cities and deserts from his previous journeys – up to eleven different countries are thus unified in one picture. These compositions, reminiscent of Gaudí’s mosaics, evoke a powerful tranquillity out of seeming chaos. Each thorough view reveals new details, so that one will never tire of looking at these works.
