Again and again, Alexander Maria Lohmann is in search of extremes and thereby crosses boundaries – geographic ones as well as emotional and artistic ones. For HUMANPLAYGROUND, he mixes the photographic contrasts of humankind’s playing field. Materials, architectural lines and shapes have always inspired the photo artist. Yet the unconditional humanity of the Afar in Ethiopia has left a lasting impact on him.

Alexander Maria Lohmann makes the impressions from his numerous journeys coalesce into large-format photographic compositions in which scenes from Africa’s wildlife and the world’s metropolises melt into kaleidoscopic imageries that are fascinating, unsettling and touching at the same time. Photographs need not be superficially “beautiful”, Lohmann says: “They are only truly great if something is happening to you while viewing them.”
